Android Operating System for Mobile Phones

Google Android is the first operating system designed for mobile platforms to come out of US search giant Google. It started its life on one or two smartphones from Taiwanese mobile manufacturer HTC, but has since grown in popularity amongst manufacturers and the public, with a whole glut of handsets planned for launch in 2010 running the Android platform.

The latest version of Android was made available in tandem with the launch of the Nexus One, Google`s first official smartphone branded with its own name. However, Android 2.1 is not universally used and new phones are still launching with versions 2.0 and 1.6, whilst older Android 1.5 handsets are still in use. As such, creating applications for the Android platform requires time, skill and patience and a willingness to adapt apps to make them compatible across all versions of the software to ensure the widest audience is reachable.

If you are interested in creating applications for Android then your first port of call should be the main Android developers` website, which is operated by Google in order to provide support for budding developers and help them get their creations off the drawing board and onto the Android Market to make some money. From here you can download the Android Software Development Kit (SDK), view videos, access tutorials and check out a detailed developers` guide that will make sure the process of creating an app is as painless as possible.

This year (2010), with Android gaining larger audiences by the day, there will be thousands of applications released. For some inspiration, here is a quick look at some of the Android apps that will be worth watching in 2010.

Google Voice

This official app from Google will revolutionise the way you make phone calls and check your messages. By combining all of your contacts into a single space, you will be easier to reach and find that your disparate correspondents will no longer be difficult to find.

Lock 2.0

Whilst Apple is not happy about allowing any of its third party app developers to create software that references its rivals at Google, this cannot be said about Android apps. Lock 2.0, for example, is a great screen locking app that apes the look of the iPhone`s own system for preventing your touchscreen phone from being pressed whilst it is in your pocket. It is highly customisable and has a thriving user community that is constantly creating new skins to make the app customisable.

NubiNews Reader

Checking up on the latest stories is easy with Android, as most smartphones that use Google`s operating system have fast network connections for mobile internet access. NubiNews amalgamates major news feed from papers, tech sites, sports channels and many more into one modifiable app that you can tailor to your particular tastes in current affairs.

Many developers who create Android apps can work from home, either as a hobby in their spare time or as a full time job if they are successful and inventive enough. Keeping an eye on what apps gain popularity will give you a good idea of what the Android community enjoys and what it is likely to download in the future.
