MAMP

The acronym MAMP refers to the Apple Macintosh operating system, Mac OS X, and a set of free software programs commonly used together to run dynamic Web sites or servers:

Mac OS X, the operating system
Apache, the Web server
MySQL, the database management system (or database server)
P for PHP, Perl, or Python, all programming languages used for web development

To be precise, it is an open source Web platform built upon Mac OS X.

Though originally only Apache was integrated into Mac OS X, the combination has become popular because of its low cost and because of the ubiquity of its components, and Mac OS X now ships with PHP and is MySQL-ready. When used in combination they represent a solution stack of technologies that support application servers. Other such stacks include Apple Computer's WebObjects, Java/Java EE and Microsoft's .NET architecture.

In general use, MAMP refers to a packaging of these technologies for development use by webEdition. This is a development environment, and not intended for general production use as a webserver. webEdition recommends using Mac OS X Server with the provided Apache software or a Linux server, although it should be noted that all the MAMP technologies run on base Mac OS X outside of their sandbox.
