Set Values
Use this calculator to compare the light gathering capabilities of any two telescope apertures.
The most important factor when trying to determine how "good" a telescope is, is its light gathering capability. This is determined by the telescope's aperture - its diameter. Basically, the bigger the aperture, the more light the telescope can gather, which will allow it to see dimmer objects than a telescope with a smaller aperture can.
Use the following form to enter the apertures (diameters) of the two telescopes you want to compare. You can use any units you like (inches, mm, etc), but make sure you use the same units for both values.
Once you have entered values, click the Compare Telescopes button.
