(September 02, 2010) Microsoft to increase Xbox Live subscription fee The cost of subscribing to Xbox Live Gold will increase by £1 per month, Microsoft has confirmed. Microsoft has announced that it will be increasing the cost of subscriptions to its online gaming portal, Xbox Live. From November 1, Xbox Live Gold subscribers will have to pay £5.99 per month rather than £4.99 per month for access to the online gaming and movie download portal. (September 01, 2010) PlayStation 3 'hacked' PS3 owners can buy a 'modchip' to hack their console and allow games to be copied and played from a hard drive. A special USB powered PlayStation 3 'modchip' has been released which claims to allow games to be copied and played from a hard drive. The PlayStation 3 console is the only current-gen console not to be jailbroken and is famous among hackers for its security. The USB 'modchip' has been produced by PSJailbreak and claims to be the first easy solution to hacking the PlayStation console. Full story on the Telegraph website.

(August 27, 2010) The resurrection of the Commodore 64 Commodore USA is set to launch a new version of the classic gaming PC, the Commodore 64. The Commodore 64 is set to make a commercial comeback in time for Christmas. The classic all-in-one personal computer, which first went on sale in 1982, has not been sold officially since 1994. New company Commodore USA is hoping to produce a machine with an almost identical chassis to the original C64, with the original, thick, chunky keys, off-white housing, and the striped rainbow logo, but using significantly upgraded internal parts. The ?rst version of the C64 was a true phenomenon at the time, and original models still sell on eBay for around £20. Full story on the Telegraph website.

Abuse run and gun video game

Abuse is a run and gun video game developed by Crack dot Com, and published by Origin Systems/Electronic Arts. It was released in 1996, and runs on DOS and Linux operating systems.

An improved port of the game was released for Mac OS by Bungie Studios and for the Acorn Archimedes by R-Comp Interactive.

In 2009 it was ported to AmigaOS 4 as well. Furthermore, the game has been ported to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. The game's source code has been in the public domain since the late 1990s, along with some of the Shareware content.

BZFlag is a free online multiplayer cross-platform open source 3D tank battle game.

The name originates from "Battle Zone capture the Flag". It runs on Irix, Linux, *BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, and many other platforms. It's one of the most popular games ever on Silicon Graphics machines and continues to be developed and improved to this day. It's one of the most popular open source games ever.

Tilt the floor to roll a ball through an obstacle course before time runs out. Neverball is part puzzle game, part action game, and entirely a test of skill.

Also available from the web site is Neverputt - a hot-seat multiplayer miniature golf game, built on the physics and graphics engine of Neverball.

Neverball and Neverputt are both known to run under Linux, Win2K/XP, FreeBSD, and Mac OSX. Hardware accelerated OpenGL is required. A 500MHz processor is recommended.

Blocktality is a top-down shooter in which the main character 'Sphero' is fighting against the cuboids for the freedom of his people.

The game play involves fast-paced combat interspersed with interesting physics puzzles.

Aleph One free and open-source first-person shooter engine

Aleph One (formerly known as the Marathon Open Source Project) is a free and open source first-person shooter engine based on the source code of Bungie Studios' Marathon 2: Durandal.

The project commenced in early 2000, when Bungie released the code shortly before being acquired by Microsoft and spurred the fan community to further develop it. Since that time, Aleph One has become a successful project in terms of development and community support.

Allegiance Space Simulation Game

Allegiance is a free, online, multi-player space simulation game, providing a mix of real-time strategy and player-piloted space combat gameplay. The game is set circa 2150, shortly after the destruction of Earth by an asteroid, forcing the remnants of humanity to the stars in search of new land and resources.

You pilot spacecraft, flying in a team with other players, defending and attacking sectors in space. Allegiance challenges your tactical ingenuity, your ability to function in a team and your prowess at blowing stuff up. Experienced players take command and lead their teams to victory or defeat.

Initially developed by Microsoft Research, the game was later released under a shared source license in 2002 and is now maintained and developed by volunteers.

Armagetron is a multiplayer game in 3d that attempts to emulate and expand on the lightcycle sequence from the movie Tron.

It's an old school arcade game slung into the 21st century. Highlights include a customizable playing arena, HUD, unique graphics, and AI bots. For the more advanced player, there are new game modes and a wide variety of physics settings to tweak as well.

Players build, defend and attack cities in an endless quest for control and dominance.

To win you must drop the Orb on the enemy cities Command Center. The Command Center is always heavily guarded so teamwork is essential. Bomb buildings and destroy defensive infrastructure using your cities weapons.

You begin ranked as a Private and earn promotions based on how many points you gain. Work your way up to the rank of General by Orbing cities and blowing up tanks.

Daimonin is a free mmorpg, a so-called 'free to play' online game. You don't have to pay for playing. There are also free downloads available.

Daimonin is open source, with the daimonin source code available on the game project pages on the daimonin web site. You can join the team on the developer groups pages.

Daimonin is not only a mmorpg community, its an online game community. You can communicate with other daimonin players, write game blogs, upload pictures of you or game screenshots of your mmorpg character.

As computers evolve, we risk losing classic games from the not-so-distant past. One of these, Ultima 7, an RPG from the early 1990s, still has a huge following, and many consider it to be one of the most immersive games ever produced.

FreedroidRPG is a mature open source sci-fi isometric role playing game. It strives to provide an immersive ambience backed by refined graphics and music tracks.

Besides the hack'n'slash action phases, dialogs with dozens of NPCs take care of storytelling. The player can fight with melee or ranged weapons, take control of his enemies by hacking, and remotely execute code on enemy robots.

ClanBomber is a free (GNU General Public License) Bomberman-like multiplayer game that uses ClanLib, a free multi platform C++ game SDK. It is recommended to play ClanBomber with friends (3-8 players are really fun).

The successor to LBreakout offers you a new challenge in more than 50 levels with loads of new bonuses (goldshower, joker, explosive balls, bonus magnet ...), maluses (chaos, darkness, weak balls, malus magnet ...) and special bricks (growing bricks, explosive bricks, regenerative bricks ...).

If you are hungry for more you can create your own levelsets with the integrated level editor. There is also an experimental two player mode (via LAN) available.

SolarWolf was originally based on SolarFox, which ran on the Atari 2600. The point of the game is to scramble through 60 levels collecting space boxes along the way, with each level getting harder than the previous one.

Obstacles like bullets, mines, and asteroids cover your every move. Beat the Skip timer and grab the powerups.

Space Invaders OpenGL is a 2D/3D game based on the old arcade classic (by Toshihiro Nishikado) in which you must destroy enemy ships by shooting them up.

This version of the classic game was developed in OpenGL under Visual C++, and is still in development. It should run under Windows 98/XP/Vista with a 3D accelerator card and OpenGL drivers.

The project has been on stand by since May 2004.

Trackballs 3D Marble Game

Trackballs is a marble game inspired by the 80s' Atari classic Marble Madness.

By steering a marble ball through a labyrinth filled with sharp objects, pools of acid, and other obstacles, you collect points. When the destination is reached, you continue on to the next, more difficult level - unless time runs out!

Unlike marble madness, the game uses 3D graphics even though the original game had no real use for it. Also the game is fully programmable with a scripting extension (Guile), and includes a level editor so that you can create new levels.

Trackballs is an open source game that was developed as a hobby project by Mathias Broxvall, with the help of contributions from various people around the world. The game is primarily developed for Linux but ports to other operating systems also exist. Since the source code of the game is available and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, anyone can contribute to the game with changes, translations into new languages, additional levels, etc.

GNU Go is a free program that plays the game of Go. GNU Go has played thousands of games on the NNGS Go server. GNU Go is now also playing regularly on the Legend Go Server in Taiwan, on the WING server in Japan, and many volunteers run GNU Go clients on KGS. GNU Go has established itself as the leading non-commercial go program in the recent tournaments in which it has taken part.

Yahtzo! is a Yahtzee!® game for Windows machines, specifically programmed in Microsoft Visual Basic .NET.

Tower Toppler Platform Game

In this game you have to help a cute little green animal switch off some kind of "evil" mechanism. The "power off switch" is hidden somewhere in high towers. On your way to the target you need to avoid a lot of strange robots that guard the tower.

That sounds all like a normal jump and run game. What makes this game different is that you walk arond the tower which is revolving on the screen, so that you only see the 180o that are currently visible.

The game is a reimplementation of the old game known as Tower Toppler or Nebulus. It was available for PC, Atari, C64.

Fight Win Prevail First Person Shooter Game

Fight Win Prevail (or FWP for short) is a hobbyist multiplayer first person shooter.

The game is set in an imaginary universe where fearless pilots fight to the death with their futuristic vehicles. Gameplay lies somewhere between the Mechwarrior-series and Quake 3. It is faster and more action-orientated than in Mechwarrior, but tries to avoid the 'jump-around-like-crazy-and-fire-at-everything-that-moves'-gameplay known from Quake 3.

Fight Win Prevail is a pure multiplayer game and does not have a real singleplayer mode. Our primary target are LANs, but the game is playable over the internet, too.
